CATL and Masdar Partner on World’s Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project in Abu Dhabi

Chinese battery giant CATL and Masdar, the UAE’s flagship renewable energy company, have announced a landmark partnership to develop the world’s largest solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Abu Dhabi. The collaboration, unveiled on January 17, represents a transformative step in clean energy innovation, integrating solar power with cutting-edge battery storage technology on an unprecedented scale.

With an estimated investment exceeding $6 billion, the project will feature 5.2 GW of solar power generation capacity coupled with 19 GWh of energy storage. This combination will enable the facility to deliver up to 1 GW of continuous baseload power around the clock—24 hours a day, seven days a week—establishing a global benchmark for renewable energy infrastructure.

Described as Masdar’s most ambitious initiative to date, the project underscores the UAE’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions. “As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we made sure we are working with the best possible partners that will deliver to the highest standards,” said Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer at Masdar.

At the heart of the venture is CATL’s proprietary TENER technology, known for its robust safety features, extended service life, and high level of system integration. The advanced energy storage solution has been engineered to ensure the project operates efficiently and reliably, adapting seamlessly to diverse working conditions and application scenarios.
