ESG & TCFD Readiness Checklist
Self-assess your climate disclosure readiness across governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics & targets -- get a maturity score and a prioritized list of gaps to close.
Checklist
Check what’s already in place. Aligned to the TCFD’s four pillars.
Baseline building blocks most ESG frameworks and disclosure rules expect before anything else.
How the board and management oversee climate-related risks and opportunities (TCFD pillar 1).
How climate risks/opportunities shape strategy and financial planning across time horizons (TCFD pillar 2).
How climate risks are identified, assessed, and integrated into overall risk management (TCFD pillar 3).
The metrics, GHG emissions data, and targets used to track climate performance (TCFD pillar 4).
Readiness
Most of the foundational building blocks are not yet in place. Start with ESG fundamentals and board-level ownership.
Draft a short policy statement covering environmental, social, and governance commitments and get sign-off from a founder or the board.
Assign clear ownership -- even part-time -- so ESG data collection doesn’t fall through the cracks each reporting cycle.
Start with what you already have -- utility bills, HR headcount data, safety incident logs -- and formalize an annual collection cycle.

Methodology & sourcing
The Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Metrics & Targets sections map directly to the four pillars and eleven recommended disclosures of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), which now underpins the IFRS ISSB S1/S2 standards and several national climate-disclosure rules.
Overall readiness is an equal-weighted average across the five sections, so a small section (like Governance’s 2 items) isn’t diluted by a larger one. This is a self-assessment planning tool, not an audit or a certification.
FAQ
Common questions about ESG and TCFD-aligned climate disclosure readiness.
What is the ESG & TCFD Readiness Checklist?
It’s a self-assessment checklist covering general ESG fundamentals plus the four pillars of the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) framework -- governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics & targets -- producing a readiness score and a prioritized list of gaps.
What is TCFD, and why does it matter?
TCFD is a widely adopted framework for disclosing climate-related financial risk. It now underpins the IFRS ISSB S1/S2 global sustainability standards and is referenced by disclosure rules in the EU (CSRD), UK, and elsewhere, making it the de facto baseline for climate risk reporting.
Is this checklist an official audit or certification?
No. It’s a self-assessment planning tool to help you identify gaps before engaging an auditor, consultant, or formal disclosure process -- it does not constitute compliance with any specific regulation.
My company is small -- do ESG/TCFD disclosure rules even apply to me?
Possibly, indirectly. Even if you’re not directly in scope, larger customers, investors, or partners subject to rules like the EU’s CSRD increasingly push ESG data requests down their supply chain, so early readiness reduces friction later.
How is the readiness score calculated?
Each of the five sections (ESG fundamentals, Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, Metrics & Targets) gets a percentage based on items checked. The overall score is an equal-weighted average across sections, so a smaller section isn’t diluted by a larger one.
What if I can’t check most of the Metrics & Targets items yet?
That’s common -- GHG emissions measurement (Scope 1/2/3) and target-setting are usually the last pieces to mature. Start with our Carbon Reduction Impact Calculator to get a directional first estimate of your emissions.
Can I share my results with my team or board?
Yes. The tool generates a shareable link that preserves your checked items, so you can send a snapshot for review or revisit it later.
Where can I learn more about the underlying framework?
The TCFD’s final recommendations report (available at fsb-tcfd.org) is the primary source. For the current global standard building on TCFD, see the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (ISSB S1/S2).
